Collaborative Frameworks Prove Effectiveness

Large corporations are increasingly frustrated with the time and cost of customizing and integrating applications to meet their business process requirements. This frustration is compounded by the accelerating speed of change that further increases the demands on IT resources. These enterprises require increasingly more cost-effective approaches to operate in the emerging just-in-time collaborative business environment.

To meet these growing demands, companies need to efficiently and securely collaborate among customers, geographically dispersed business units, external joint ventures and various outsourcing partners on a "just-in-time" or "real-time" manner.

However, existing web application software development is grossly inadequate for cross-enterprise collaborative computing across the Internet. Simply retrieving web documents from a web server or capturing orders from a web browser is not reliable, sufficiently robust or rich in functionality for mission-critical, "real-time", transaction-based systems. Additionally, in an attempt to construct such web-based, trans-enterprise systems, the average IT developer in a Fortune 1000 firm must grapple with the growing complexity of a bewildering variety of technologies and products .

We have constructed a suite of extensible, Internet-scale application components (and network protocol), called "AppAgents" and a supporting environment targeted at IT enterprise developers that address this requirement. We intend on extending this framework to leverage newly available service-oriented tools, e.g., "Web Services" and to reach this goal with a technology-agnostic approach (i.e., Java and .NET).

All of the components in the screen snapshots below can communicate with each other over HTTP. This framework allows developers to build browsers that can drive other browsers (real-estate, vacation, e-learning), collaborative presentation tools, cross-device chat and IM applications, virtual mentors, sharable editors, listen to MP3 tunes as a group across the web, have a spreadsheet propagate stock prices to other applications, send instant images via simple drag-and-drop, do pair-programming remotely, et al. The types of synchronous and asynchronous collaboration applications are truly endless.
